This essay was written in a time of extreme trouble -- what's commonly referred to as a "mid-life crisis." I had just lost my religion and was experiencing, at the same time, an unusual surge in libido. I was able to keep myself from getting a girlfriend, but only barely. I kept her, and in doing so I saved myself. But I was on the verge of despair here, and my wife knew our marriage was in great danger.
